بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Ruku 1 of 1 · 19 Ayahs

The First Revelation 1–5

ٱقۡرَأۡاِقْرَاْRead
بِٱسۡمِبِاسْمِin (the) name
رَبِّكَ(of) your Lord
ٱلَّذِيالَّذِيْthe One Who
خَلَقَcreated

Recite in the name of your Lord who created –

خَلَقَHe created
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَالْاِنْسَانَman
مِنۡمِنْfrom
عَلَقٍa clinging substance

Created man from a clinging substance.

ٱقۡرَأۡاِقْرَاْRead
وَرَبُّكَand your Lord
ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُالْاَكْرَمُ(is) the Most Generous

Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

ٱلَّذِيالَّذِيْThe One Who
عَلَّمَtaught
بِٱلۡقَلَمِبِالْقَلَمِby the pen

Who taught by the pen –

عَلَّمَTaught
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَالْاِنْسَانَman
مَاwhat
لَمۡلَمْnot
يَعۡلَمۡيَعْلَمْhe knew

Taught man that which he knew not.

1 Recite in the name of your Lord who created – 2 Created man from a clinging substance. 3 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 4 Who taught by the pen – 5 Taught man that which he knew not.

Man's Arrogance in Self-Sufficiency 6–8

كـَلَّآكَلَّا͏ٓNay
إِنَّاِنَّIndeed
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَالْاِنْسَانَman
لَيَطۡغَىٰٓلَيَطْغٰٓيsurely transgresses

No! [But] indeed, man transgresses

أَناَنْThat
رَّءَاهُرَّاٰهُhe sees himself
ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰٓاسْتَغْنٰيself-sufficient

Because he sees himself self-sufficient.

إِنَّاِنَّIndeed
إِلَىٰاِلٰيto
رَبِّكَyour Lord
ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰٓالرُّجْعٰي(is) the return

Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

6 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 7 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 8 Indeed, to your Lord is the return.

Stopping a Servant from Prayer 9–14

أَرَءَيۡتَاَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
ٱلَّذِيالَّذِيْthe one who
يَنۡهَىٰيَنْهٰيforbids

Have you seen the one who forbids

عَبۡدًاعَبْدًاA slave
إِذَااِذَاwhen
صَلَّىٰٓصَلّٰيhe prays

A servant when he prays?

أَرَءَيۡتَاَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
إِناِنْif
كَانَhe is
عَلَىعَلَيupon
ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓالْهُدٰٓي[the] guidance

Have you seen if he is upon guidance

أَوۡاَوْOr
أَمَرَاَمَرَhe enjoins
بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰٓبِالتَّقْوٰي[of the] righteousness

Or enjoins righteousness?

أَرَءَيۡتَاَرَءَيْتَHave you seen
إِناِنْif
كَذَّبَhe denies
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓوَتَوَلّٰيand turns away

Have you seen if he denies and turns away -

أَلَمۡاَلَمْDoes not
يَعۡلَميَعْلَمْhe know
بِأَنَّبِاَنَّthat
ٱللَّهَاللّٰهَAllah
يَرَىٰيَرٰيsees

Does he not know that Allāh sees?

9 Have you seen the one who forbids 10 A servant when he prays? 11 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 12 Or enjoins righteousness? 13 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 14 Does he not know that Allāh sees?

Warning to the Persecutor 15–19

كـَلَّاكَلَّاNay
لَئِنلَىِٕنْIf
لَّمۡلَّمْnot
يَنتَهِيَنْتَهِ࣢ۙhe desists
لَنَسۡفَعَۢالَنَسْفَعًاۢsurely We will drag him
بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِبِالنَّاصِيَةِby the forelock

No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock –

نَاصِيَةٖنَاصِيَةٍA forelock
كَٰذِبَةٍكَاذِبَةٍlying
خَاطِئَةٖخَاطِي͏ٔ͏َةٍsinful

A lying, sinning forelock.

فَلۡيَدۡعُفَلْيَدْعُThen let him call
نَادِيَهُۥنَادِيَهٗhis associates

Then let him call his associates;

سَنَدۡعُسَنَدْعُWe will call
ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَالزَّبَانِيَةَthe Angels of Hell

We will call the angels of Hell.

كـَلَّاكَلَّاؕNay
لَا(Do) not
تُطِعۡهُتُطِعْهُobey him
وَٱسۡجُدۡۤوَاسْجُدْBut prostrate
وَٱقۡتَرِب۩وَاقْتَرِبْand draw near (to Allah)

No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].

15 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock – 16 A lying, sinning forelock. 17 Then let him call his associates; 18 We will call the angels of Hell. 19 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
