Man's Journey Toward His Lord 6–9

يَٰٓأَيُّهَايٰٓاَيُّهَاO
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُالْاِنْسَانُmankind
إِنَّكَاِنَّكَIndeed, you
كَادِحٌ(are) laboring
إِلَىٰاِلٰيto
رَبِّكَyour Lord
كَدۡحٗاكَدْحًا(with) exertion
فَمُلَٰقِيهِفَمُلٰقِيْهِand you (will) meet Him

O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.

فَأَمَّافَاَمَّاThen as for
مَنۡمَنْ(him) who
أُوتِيَاُوْتِيَis given
كِتَٰبَهُۥكِتٰبَهٗhis record
بِيَمِينِهِۦبِيَمِيْنِهٖin his right (hand)

Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,

فَسَوۡفَفَسَوْفَThen soon
يُحَاسَبُhis account will be taken
حِسَابٗاحِسَابًاan account
يَسِيرٗايَّسِيْرًاeasy

He will be judged with an easy account

وَيَنقَلِبُوَّيَنْقَلِبُAnd he will return
إِلَىٰٓاِلٰٓيto
أَهۡلِهِۦاَهْلِهٖhis people
مَسۡرُورٗامَسْرُوْرًاhappily

And return to his people in happiness.

6 O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. 7 Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand, 8 He will be judged with an easy account 9 And return to his people in happiness.

The Fate of the Proud Denier 10–15

وَأَمَّاوَاَمَّاBut as for
مَنۡمَنْ(him) who
أُوتِيَاُوْتِيَis given
كِتَٰبَهُۥكِتٰبَهٗhis record
وَرَآءَوَرَا࢜ءَbehind
ظَهۡرِهِۦظَهْرِهٖhis back

But as for he who is given his record behind his back,

فَسَوۡفَفَسَوْفَThen soon
يَدۡعُواْيَدْعُوْاhe will call
ثُبُورٗاثُبُوْرًا(for) destruction

He will cry out for destruction

وَيَصۡلَىٰوَّيَصْلٰيAnd he will burn
سَعِيرًاسَعِيْرًا(in) a Blaze

And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.

إِنَّهُۥاِنَّهٗIndeed, he
كَانَhad been
فِيٓفِيْٓamong
أَهۡلِهِۦاَهْلِهٖhis people
مَسۡرُورًامَسْرُوْرًاhappy

Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;

إِنَّهُۥاِنَّهٗIndeed, he
ظَنَّ(had) thought
أَناَنْthat
لَّنلَّنْnever
يَحُورَيَّحُوْرَhe would return

Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh].

بِهِۦبِهٖof him
بَصِيرٗابَصِيْرًاAll-Seer

But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.

10 But as for he who is given his record behind his back, 11 He will cry out for destruction 12 And [enter to] burn in a Blaze. 13 Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness; 14 Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh]. 15 But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.

Oaths on Man's Changing Stages 16–19

فَلَآفَلَا͏ٓBut nay
أُقۡسِمُاُقْسِمُI swear
بِٱلشَّفَقِبِالشَّفَقِby the twilight glow

So I swear by the twilight glow

وَٱلَّيۡلِوَالَّيْلِAnd the night
وَمَاand what
وَسَقَit envelops

And [by] the night and what it envelops

وَٱلۡقَمَرِوَالْقَمَرِAnd the moon
إِذَااِذَاwhen
ٱتَّسَقَاتَّسَقَit becomes full

And [by] the moon when it becomes full

لَتَرۡكَبُنَّلَتَرْكَبُنَّYou will surely embark
طَبَقًا(to) stage
عَنعَنْfrom

[That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.

16 So I swear by the twilight glow 17 And [by] the night and what it envelops 18 And [by] the moon when it becomes full 19 [That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.

Rejection of the Quran and Its Outcome 20–25

فَمَاSo what
لَهُمۡلَهُمْ(is) for them
لَاnot
يُؤۡمِنُونَيُو͏ٔ͏ْمِنُوْنَthey believe

So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,

وَإِذَاوَاِذَاAnd when
قُرِئَقُرِي͏ٔ͏َis recited
عَلَيۡهِمُعَلَيْهِمُto them
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُالْقُرْاٰنُthe Quran
لَاnot
يَسۡجُدُونَۤ ۩يَسْجُدُوْنَthey prostrate

And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]?

بَلِNay
ٱلَّذِينَالَّذِيْنَThose who
كَفَرُواْكَفَرُوْاdisbelieved
يُكَذِّبُونَيُكَذِّبُوْنَdeny

But those who have disbelieved deny,

وَٱللَّهُوَاللّٰهُAnd Allah
أَعۡلَمُاَعْلَمُ(is) most knowing
بِمَاof what
يُوعُونَيُوْعُوْنَthey keep within themselves

And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.

فَبَشِّرۡهُمفَبَشِّرْهُمْso give them tidings
بِعَذَابٍof a punishment
أَلِيمٍاَلِيْمٍpainful

So give them tidings of a painful punishment,

إِلَّااِلَّاExcept
ٱلَّذِينَالَّذِيْنَthose who
ءَامَنُواْاٰمَنُوْاbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْوَعَمِلُواand do
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِالصّٰلِحٰتِrighteous deeds
لَهُمۡلَهُمْFor them
أَجۡرٌاَجْرٌ(is) a reward
غَيۡرُغَيْرُnever
مَمۡنُونِۭمَمْنُوْنٍending

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.

20 So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe, 21 And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]? 22 But those who have disbelieved deny, 23 And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves. 24 So give them tidings of a painful punishment, 25 Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
