Allah's Oaths

لَعَمۡرُكَ إِنَّهُمۡ لَفِي سَكۡرَتِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ ٧٢

لَعَمْرُكَ اِنَّهُمْ لَفِيْ سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُوْنَ ۝٧٢

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسۡـَٔلَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٩٢

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَ ۝٩٢ۙ

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحۡشُرَنَّهُمۡ وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحۡضِرَنَّهُمۡ حَوۡلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيّٗا ٦٨

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَالشَّيٰطِيْنَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّا ۝٦٨ۚ

So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.

وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ ٢

وَالْقُرْاٰنِ الْحَكِيْمِ ۝٢ۙ

By the wise Qur’ān,

وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفّٗا ١

وَالصّٰ࢜فّٰتِ صَفًّا ۝١ۙ

By those [angels] lined up in rows

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجۡرٗا ٢

فَالزّٰجِرٰتِ زَجْرًا ۝٢ۙ

And those who drive [the clouds]

فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ٣

فَالتّٰلِيٰتِ ذِكْرًا ۝٣ۙ

And those who recite the message,

صٓۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ذِي ٱلذِّكۡرِ ١

ص࢜ وَالْقُرْاٰنِ ذِي الذِّكْرِ ۝١ؕ

Ṣād. By the Qur’ān containing reminder...

قَالَ فَٱلۡحَقُّ وَٱلۡحَقَّ أَقُولُ ٨٤

قَالَ فَالْحَقُّؗ وَالْحَقَّ اَقُوْلُ ۝٨٤ۚ

[Allāh] said, "The truth [is My oath], and the truth I say -

وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢

وَالْكِتٰبِ الْمُبِيْنِ ۝٢ۙۛ

By the clear Book,

وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢

وَالْكِتٰبِ الْمُبِيْنِ ۝٢ۙۛ

By the clear Book,

قٓۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ٱلۡمَجِيدِ ١

ق࢜ࣞۚ وَالْقُرْاٰنِ الْمَجِيْدِ ۝١ۚ

Qāf. By the honored Qur’ān...

وَٱلذَّٰرِيَٰتِ ذَرۡوٗا ١

وَالذّٰرِيٰتِ ذَرْوًا ۝١ۙ

By the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]

فَٱلۡحَٰمِلَٰتِ وِقۡرٗا ٢

فَالْحٰمِلٰتِ وِقْرًا ۝٢ۙ

And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

فَٱلۡجَٰرِيَٰتِ يُسۡرٗا ٣

فَالْجٰرِيٰتِ يُسْرًا ۝٣ۙ

And the ships sailing with ease

فَٱلۡمُقَسِّمَٰتِ أَمۡرًا ٤

فَالْمُقَسِّمٰتِ اَمْرًا ۝٤ۙ

And the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡحُبُكِ ٧

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِ ۝٧ۙ

By the heaven containing pathways,

فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقّٞ مِّثۡلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمۡ تَنطِقُونَ ٢٣

فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَا࢜ءِ وَالْاَرْضِ اِنَّهٗ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَا͏ٓ اَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُوْنَ ۝٢٣

Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.

وَٱلطُّورِ ١

وَالطُّوْرِ ۝١ۙ

By the mount

وَكِتَٰبٖ مَّسۡطُورٖ ٢

وَكِتٰبٍ مَّسْطُوْرٍ ۝٢ۙ

And [by] a Book inscribed

فِي رَقّٖ مَّنشُورٖ ٣

فِيْ رَقٍّ مَّنْشُوْرٍ ۝٣ۙ

In parchment spread open

وَٱلۡبَيۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡمُورِ ٤

وَّالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُوْرِ ۝٤ۙ

And [by] the frequented House

وَٱلسَّقۡفِ ٱلۡمَرۡفُوعِ ٥

وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوْعِ ۝٥ۙ

And [by] the ceiling [i.e., heaven] raised high

وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ ٱلۡمَسۡجُورِ ٦

وَالْبَحْرِ الْمَسْجُوْرِ ۝٦ۙ

And [by] the sea set on fire,

وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ١

وَالنَّجْمِ اِذَا هَوٰي ۝١ۙ

By the star when it descends,

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ ٧٥

فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِمَوٰقِعِ النُّجُوْمِ ۝٧٥ۙ

Then I swear by the setting of the stars,

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٞ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ٧٦

وَاِنَّهٗ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ عَظِيْمٌ ۝٧٦ۙ

And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.

نٓۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَ ١

ن࢜ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُوْنَ ۝١ۙ

Nūn. By the pen and what they inscribe,

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ٣٨

فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۝٣٨ۙ

So I swear by what you see

وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ٣٩

وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۝٣٩ۙ

And what you do not see

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ ٤٠

فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشٰرِقِ وَالْمَغٰرِبِ اِنَّا لَقٰدِرُوْنَ ۝٤٠ۙ

So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

كـَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ٣٢

كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ ۝٣٢ۙ

No! By the moon

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ٣٣

وَالَّيْلِ اِذْ اَدْبَرَ ۝٣٣ۙ

And [by] the night when it departs

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ ٣٤

وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا͏ٓ اَسْفَرَ ۝٣٤ۙ

And [by] the morning when it brightens,

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ ١

لَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِ ۝١ۙ

I swear by the Day of Resurrection

وَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلنَّفۡسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ ٢

وَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ ۝٢ؕ

And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].

وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَٰتِ عُرۡفٗا ١

وَالْمُرْسَلٰتِ عُرْفًا ۝١ۙ

By those [winds] sent forth in gusts

فَٱلۡعَٰصِفَٰتِ عَصۡفٗا ٢

فَالْعٰصِفٰتِ عَصْفًا ۝٢ۙ

And the winds that blow violently

وَٱلنَّٰشِرَٰتِ نَشۡرٗا ٣

وَّالنّٰشِرٰتِ نَشْرًا ۝٣ۙ

And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]

فَٱلۡفَٰرِقَٰتِ فَرۡقٗا ٤

فَالْفٰرِقٰتِ فَرْقًا ۝٤ۙ

And those [angels] who bring criterion

فَٱلۡمُلۡقِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ٥

فَالْمُلْقِيٰتِ ذِكْرًا ۝٥ۙ

And those [angels] who deliver a message

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقٗا ١

وَالنّٰزِعٰتِ غَرْقًا ۝١ۙ

By those [angels] who extract with violence

وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطٗا ٢

وَّالنّٰشِطٰتِ نَشْطًا ۝٢ۙ

And [by] those who remove with ease

وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحٗا ٣

وَّالسّٰبِحٰتِ سَبْحًا ۝٣ۙ

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming

فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقٗا ٤

فَالسّٰبِقٰتِ سَبْقًا ۝٤ۙ

And those who race each other in a race

فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرٗا ٥

فَالْمُدَبِّرٰتِ اَمْرًا ۝٥ۘ

And those who arrange [each] matter,

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ ١٥

فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ ۝١٥ۙ

So I swear by the retreating stars -

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ ١٦

الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ ۝١٦ۙ

Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ ١٧

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا عَسْعَسَ ۝١٧ۙ

And by the night as it closes in

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ١٨

وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ۝١٨ۙ

And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ١٦

فَلَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ ۝١٦ۙ

So I swear by the twilight glow

وَٱلَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ١٧

وَالَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ۝١٧ۙ

And [by] the night and what it envelops

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ١٨

وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا اتَّسَقَ ۝١٨ۙ

And [by] the moon when it becomes full

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلۡبُرُوجِ ١

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوْجِ ۝١ۙ

By the sky containing great stars

وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡمَوۡعُودِ ٢

وَالْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُوْدِ ۝٢ۙ

And [by] the promised Day

وَشَاهِدٖ وَمَشۡهُودٖ ٣

وَشَاهِدٍ وَّمَشْهُوْدٍ ۝٣ؕ

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ ١

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءِ وَالطَّارِقِ ۝١ۙ

By the sky and the knocker

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجۡعِ ١١

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءِ ذَاتِ الرَّجْعِ ۝١١ۙ

By the sky which sends back

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدۡعِ ١٢

وَالْاَرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ۝١٢ۙ

And [by] the earth which splits,

وَٱلۡفَجۡرِ ١

وَالْفَجْرِ ۝١ۙ

By the dawn

وَلَيَالٍ عَشۡرٖ ٢

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ۝٢ۙ

And [by] ten nights

وَٱلشَّفۡعِ وَٱلۡوَتۡرِ ٣

وَّالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ۝٣ۙ

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَسۡرِ ٤

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَسْرِ ۝٤ۚ

And [by] the night when it passes,

هَلۡ فِي ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٞ لِّذِي حِجۡرٍ ٥

هَلْ فِيْ ذٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِيْ حِجْرٍ ۝٥ؕ

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ١

لَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۝١ۙ

I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah] –

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ ٣

وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَ ۝٣ۙ

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

وَٱلشَّمۡسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا ١

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحٰىهَا ۝١ࣕۙ

By the sun and its brightness

وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا ٢

وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا تَلٰىهَا ۝٢ࣕۙ

And [by] the moon when it follows it

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا ٣

وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا جَلّٰىهَا ۝٣ࣕۙ

And [by] the day when it displays it

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰهَا ٤

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰىهَا ۝٤ࣕۙ

And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا ٥

وَالسَّمَا࢜ءِ وَمَا بَنٰىهَا ۝٥ࣕۙ

And [by] the sky and He who constructed it

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا ٦

وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا طَحٰىهَا ۝٦ࣕۙ

And [by] the earth and He who spread it

وَنَفۡسٖ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا ٧

وَنَفْسٍ وَّمَا سَوّٰىهَا ۝٧ࣕۙ

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا يَغۡشَىٰ ١

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰي ۝١ۙ

By the night when it covers

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ٢

وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا تَجَلّٰي ۝٢ۙ

And [by] the day when it appears

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓ ٣

وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُنْثٰٓي ۝٣ۙ

And [by] He who created the male and female,

وَٱلضُّحَىٰ ١

وَالضُّحٰي ۝١ۙ

By the morning brightness

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ ٢

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا سَجٰي ۝٢ۙ

And [by] the night when it covers with darkness,

وَٱلتِّينِ وَٱلزَّيۡتُونِ ١

وَالتِّيْنِ وَالزَّيْتُوْنِ ۝١ۙ

By the fig and the olive

وَطُورِ سِينِينَ ٢

وَطُوْرِ سِيْنِيْنَ ۝٢ۙ

And [by] Mount Sinai

وَهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ ٱلۡأَمِينِ ٣

وَهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ الْاَمِيْنِ ۝٣ۙ

And [by] this secure city [i.e., Makkah],

وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ ضَبۡحٗا ١

وَالْعٰدِيٰتِ ضَبْحًا ۝١ۙ

By the racers, panting,

فَٱلۡمُورِيَٰتِ قَدۡحٗا ٢

فَالْمُوْرِيٰتِ قَدْحًا ۝٢ۙ

And the producers of sparks [when] striking

فَٱلۡمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبۡحٗا ٣

فَالْمُغِيْرٰتِ صُبْحًا ۝٣ۙ

And the chargers at dawn,

فَأَثَرۡنَ بِهِۦ نَقۡعٗا ٤

فَاَثَرْنَ بِهٖ نَقْعًا ۝٤ۙ

Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,

فَوَسَطۡنَ بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا ٥

فَوَسَطْنَ بِهٖ جَمْعًا ۝٥ۙ

Arriving thereby in the center collectively,

وَٱلۡعَصۡرِ ١

وَالْعَصْرِ ۝١ۙ

By time,
